Mount Merapi Erupted on Saturday, Causing Ash Rain Covers Nearby Villages

JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, erupted on Saturday and continue spewing out ashes and smoke covering villages near its crater.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that there were no immediate reports of casualties after the eruption of Mount Merapi, Central Java.

Previously, Mount Merapi had erupted in April 2020 with the height of the eruption column measuring 3000 meters from the top of the crater. And from March 12 night until earlier morning this day, it’s doing the same thing.

Restricted zone has been established by the authorities 7km from the crater following the volcanic eruption.

Disturbance should be expected by the nearby residents and be alert to possible hazards from volcanic mudflow.

The villages around the Mount were affected by ashes (or ash rain) and residents were asked to put on masks due to low level air quality.

This is the second time after 2020’s eruption that the volcano’s alert status remained at the second-highest level.

In 2010, a major eruption occured and caused over 300 casualties, forcing about 280.000 to be evacuated. And on 11th November 2010, Mount Merapi’s sulfur dioxide cloud spreading all over the Indian Ocean. Even until today, the volcano is still considered as one of the most active volcanos in the world.
