JABAR EKSPRES – Manado Geophysical Station recorded 78 earthquakes that shook North Sulawesi and surrounding areas during the week of June 2-8, 2023.
“As many as three of the 78 earthquakes were reportedly felt by the public,” BMKG Manado Geophysical Station Data and Information Coordinator Muhammad Zulkifli said in Manado on Saturday.
He said that of the 78 earthquakes, most or about 66 percent had magnitudes between three and five, about 33 percent had magnitudes of less than three, and one percent had magnitudes of more than five.
According to the depth of the earthquake, he said, 46 percent of them were shallow earthquake (less than 60 kilometers), 51 percent were medium depth (between 60-300 kilometers), and three percent were deep earthquake (more than 300 kilometers).

From the seismicity map or epicenter map, Zulkifli said, most of the earthquakes with shallow depths occurred on the Maluku sea plate, namely in the waters between North Sulawesi and North Maluku.
Meanwhile, two earthquakes were reportedly felt by the public, namely in Toli-toli Regency, Central Sulawesi Province and one in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province.
When compared to the previous week, according to him, there were more earthquake recorded that week, while the period May 26-June 01, 2023 recorded 45 earthquakes.
Most of the earthquakes recorded in that period or 84.38 percent had magnitudes between three and five, while 15.62 percent had magnitudes less than three.
“One of the earthquakes that occurred in that week was reportedly felt by the community,” he said.
