Vice President: Government Focuses on Tackling Illegal Migrant Workers to Prevent Casualties

JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesian Vice President Ma’ruf Amin said the government continues to focus on handling illegal Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) to prevent victims of PMI in other countries.

“Yes, right now the government is preventing illegal migrant workers through human trafficking. Therefore, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, including the police, are conducting strict supervision to suppress it from happening so that there are no victims,” the Vice President told reporters in Riau Islands, as monitored by video in Jakarta, Thursday (6/8).

In addition to handling and preventing illegal migrant workers from trafficking, the Vice President said, the Government also continues to prioritize welfare improvement in areas with high poverty rates, which are generally the place of origin of illegal migrant workers.

“The Government directs potential areas of illegal migrant workers, areas with high poverty rates. Therefore, this must be a concern, one of which is not only in Java but also in NTT. Well, we will try to prioritize the reduction of poverty,” the Vice President explained.

The government also continues to make agreements with PMI placement countries not to accept illegal workers.

“That must be prevented. Legal migrant workers can be monitored, but usually the victims are illegal. So, in addition to preventing trafficking from outside, we have tightened the prevention of trafficking in all provinces,” the vice president said.
