Thanks to the persistence of the Moi Tribe MHA in maintaining Egek as an effort to preserve the environment, the Tribe was recognized as a MHA group by the Sorong District Government in 2017.
Therefore, the Moi Tribal MHA is entitled to a legally protected management area of around 4,000 hectares in the waters and 16,000 hectares on land. Usually, the Moi Tribal MHA only carry out Buka Egek with traditional rituals typical of the Moi Tribe such as with traditional dances called a’len dances.
This year, the Moi Tribal MHA held Buka Egek as well as the Egek Festival which was held on June 5-8, 2023. The event received full support from the government both local governments and various ministries as well as several Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that deal with environmental conservation issues.
From the Egek Festival, at least a lesson can be drawn that the Egek culture which is the local wisdom of the Moi Tribe can be an example for people in general not to be greedy in utilizing natural resources. Nature must be preserved, not exploited without thinking about its sustainability.
