“Indonesia has a strong starting point to sharpen it, including cross-border fisheries, such as tuna fish, tuna fish is a global fisheries hot issue,” he said.
Moreover, he said, Indonesia’s position is number two after China regarding capture fisheries. China is superior because of the technology owned by both the fishing fleet and ships. While Indonesia is far from China both in terms of ship fleet technology and fishing gear.
“But with ordinary technology we can be number two, meaning we have the potential to bargain because we are flanked by these two large oceans,” he said.
He hopes that in the future Indonesia can continue to strengthen the sustainable fisheries sector by preparing a good catch data base. Because, all policies are based on scientific studies, and scientific studies must be supported by accurate data.
“Our fisheries are heading there but not yet perfect. The government has not been able to record all catches, both from large-scale and small-scale fishermen. In the future, research and development needs to be sharpened,” he said.
