JABAR EKSPRES – Indonesian Ambassador to the United States (US), Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, is proud of the success of Indonesian deaf student Phieter Angdika, who has completed his Master’s Degree in the US.
Phieter Angdika pursued a Master of Sign Language Education (MSLED) program at Gallaudet University in Washington DC, USA.
“I am very pleased, happy, and touched by Phieter’s achievement. His achievement is something to be proud of. Phieter is the first Indonesian to complete a master’s program at Gallaudet University,” Ambassador Rosan said in a statement on Monday (5/15).
Gallaudet University, which was founded in 1864, is the only leading private university in the world that focuses on educating deaf and hard of hearing students.
Ambassador Rosan is also committed to helping Phieter continue his education to pursue a Master’s degree in Linguistics at Gallaudet University in the fall of 2023.
Phieter is one of two students receiving the World Deaf Leadership (WDL) scholarship in 2021, sponsored by the Nippon Foundation (Japan) in collaboration with Gallaudet University.

To get the scholarship, Phieter, who is also the president of Gallaudet University’s Muslim Student Association, had to compete with 425 other participants from around the world.
“After completing his education, I hope Phieter can help develop his expertise for deaf people in Indonesia,” said Rosan.
He also hopes that Indonesia will have specialized universities for people with disabilities like Gallaudet University. Currently, there are around 22.5 million people with disabilities in Indonesia.
“People with disabilities must have the widest possible access to education in order to be more confident and become the pride of the Indonesian nation,” Ambassador Rosan explained.
Meanwhile, Phieter, who is now listed as a researcher at the Sign Language Research Laboratory (LRBI) of the Faculty of Arts, University of Indonesia (UI) expressed his excitement at having the opportunity to receive higher education at Gallaudet University.
